A Fighter's Call to Action

January 22, 2010 13:54 by Maddy

People desperately searching for loved ones under rubble, people dying in the streets, a 12-day wait to see a doctor, and 300,000 people in need of food and water, is something most of us will never experience. But this is reality in Haiti after the 7.0 magnitude earthquake tore through the island. The death toll is estimated at 200,000 with 80,000 buried in mass graves sites and 2 million people homeless.

With this earthquake catastrophy, the need is great. WEC featherweight fighter Mackens Semerzier decided to do his part by posting a YouTube video on the Internet. In his two minute call to action, Semerzier says “I think we can all do something about it, I’m not asking you to empty your bank accounts or to get on the first flight over there if everyone can give just give 1 dollar. Haiti is crying right now and I hope the world takes heed.”

The WEC fighter’s parents emigrated to the U.S from Haiti in the late 1970’s. He says “It bothers me to see people like that. It just happened that it’s my people right now.” The video can be found at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BrIX4OUZ0c8  or linked through other MMA news sites.

“We all unite and help each other out” says Semerzier, “and that’s what makes the world beautiful.”  The world may not seem beautiful right now for many people, but as Semerzier says, if we help each other out as best we can, we can help the millions of  people in need.

HENDERSON From ARCO ARENA in Sacramento, California, Sunday, January 10;First Bout at 3:30 p.m. PTFight to Air Live on VERSUS at 9 p.m. ET/ 6 p.m. PT Las Vegas, NV (USA) – In addition to a lightweight title unification bout between Jamie Varner and Ben Henderson, as well as Urijah Faber’s return against top featherweight Raphael Assuncao, World Extreme Cagefighting® proudly confirms eight bouts that will be included on a tremendous card headed to ARCO Arena in Sacramento, Calif. on Jan. 10. What’s more, WEC General Manager Reed Harris confirmed that former 145-pound champion Mike Brown will return to take on newcomer Anthony Morrison in what should be an explosive fight. “Mike Brown is hungry to prove that he is still the best featherweight in the world," Harris said. “He asked for us to put him in a fight as soon as possible against a world-class opponent. Morrison is a dangerous fighter and certainly someone that poses major problems for Brown. This is an incredible match-up.” Bud Light® presents Varner vs. Henderson will be televised nationally live on VERSUS beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT.  All of the network’s live WEC events are presented in HD and Spanish language SAP where available. For more information and how to find VERSUS in your local viewing area, visit http://www.versus.com/findversus. Mike Brown (fighting out of Coconut Creek, Fla.) returns on Jan. 10 with a vengeance to reclaim the WEC featherweight title. Brown (22-5), who owns wins over Jeff Curran, Leonard Garcia, and Urijah Faber (twice), begins his road back to the belt when he faces hard-nosed fighter Anthony Morrison (fighting out of Philadelphia, Pa.). A winner of back-to-back fights, Morrison (15-6) is a versatile athlete who scored a victory over UFC vet Alvin Robinson in his last bout. He’ll look to make an immediate statement by besting Brown when the two collide next month. Two of the lightweight division’s rising stars collide when Kamal Shalorus (fighting out of Austin, Texas) wages war with Dave Jansen (fighting out of Troutdale, Ore.). Thanks to a devastating knockout win over Will Kerr in his WEC debut in November, many believe the Iranian-born Shalorus has the potential to one day rule the 155-pound division. Effectively mixing power with staunch grappling, the former Olympic wrestler Shalorus (5-0-1) seeks his second win in the organization when he battles his Team Quest-trained opponent. Unbeaten in 11 professional fights, Jansen was equally impressive in his WEC debut, dominating seasoned veteran Rich Crunkilton last October. He’ll look to join the division’s elite with a victory over Shalorus at ARCO Arena.

Now the 23-year-old Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt and Louisa, Kentucky native will look for his sixth UFC win while testing his standup skills against devastating striker Paul Daley (fighting out of Nottingham, England/22-8-2). A World Muay Thai champion with a tremendous international resume, the 26-year-old “Semtex” blasted his way into the UFC with a thunderous first-round TKO against welterweight contender Martin Kampmann at UFC 103 and he plans on a repeat performance against Hazelett. After arriving on the scene in 2006 with a 48-second dismantling of MMA legend Jens Pulver in his UFC debut, Joe Lauzon (fighting out of Bridgewater, Mass./17-4) has gone on to win four of his next five Octagon bouts. The 25-year-old lightweight has finished Kyle Bradley and Jeremy Stephens in his last two bouts and now faces skilled striker Sam Stout (fighting out of London, Ontario, Canada/15-5-1). The 25-year-old “Hands of Stone” has three UFC wins in his career and is coming off a unanimous decision victory against the durable Matt Wiman at UFC 97. Winner of four of his first five fights in the UFC, Jim Miller (fighting out of Whippany, N.J./15-2) is making plenty of noise in the lightweight division. In his last two fights, the 26-year-old Sparta, New Jersey-born fighter earned a unanimous decision victory against veteran Mac Danzig followed by a solid TKO win against Steve Lopez at UFC 103. Now Miller turns his attention to knockout artist Duane “Bang” Ludwig (fighting out of Denver, Colo./27-9). A veteran of two UFC fights, Ludwig turned heads with an 11-second destruction of Jonathan Goulet in 2006 and is aiming to keep his unbeaten Octagon streak going. A fighter that is impressively tearing his way through the heavyweight division, rising star Junior Dos Santos (fighting out of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil/9-1) knocked out Fabricio Werdum and Stefan Struve before forcing a verbal submission due to strikes against feared mixed martial artist Mirko Cro Cop at UFC 103. Now the 25-year-old faces one of the toughest tests of his career against the experienced Gilbert Yvel (fighting out of Amsterdam, Netherlands/36-13-1, 1 NC). A respected PRIDE® veteran, Yvel has fought some of the best fighters in the world en route to 31 KOs in his 36 career wins. A successful middleweight fighter that has found even greater success in the stacked welterweight division, Martin Kampmann (fighting out of Las Vegas, Nev./15-3) earned a split-decision victory against former World Extreme Cagefighting® welterweight champion Carlos Condit last April after defeating some of the toughest fighters in the 185-pound weight class. But the 27-year-old might be meeting his match on the ground when he faces three-time NCAA Division I All-American Jacob Volkmann (fighting out of White Bear Lake, Minn./9-1). The 29-year-old former Big Ten collegiate wrestling champion will be seeking his first UFC win on January 2nd. With four UFC wins already under his belt at age 25, Cole Miller (fighting out of Coconut Creek, Fla./15-4) impressed many last year with his submission victory against MMA veteran and Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Jorge Gurgel. The Augusta, Georgia native followed that up with another submission victory, this time against Junie Browning last April. Now the well-rounded lightweight will touch gloves with 21-year-old phenom Dan Lauzon (fighting out of Bridgewater, Mass./12-2). The younger brother of UFC veteran Joe Lauzon, Dan was thrown into the fire right away when he drew veteran Spencer Fisher as his first UFC opponent in 2006. Lauzon has learned plenty from the experience and will take that knowledge into the Octagon™ when he faces Miller. There are few light heavyweights more experienced than Vladimir Matyushenko (fighting out of El Segundo, Calif./23-4). The 38-year-old Belarusian impressed many at UFC 103, returning to the Octagon for the first time in six years and earning a unanimous decision victory against Igor Pokrajac. But “The Janitor” will have his hands full when he squares off against UFC up-and-comer Steve Cantwell (fighting out of Las Vegas, Nev./7-3). A former WEC® light heavyweight champion, the 23-year-old had three consecutive wins in the WEC before defeating Razak Al-Hassan by armbar in his UFC debut in 2008. After making the drop to middleweight, Mark Munoz (fighting out of Vallejo, Calif./6-1) earned a split decision win against Nick Catone at UFC 102. A 2001 NCAA Division I national champion wrestler at Oklahoma State, “The Filipino Wrecking Machine” has worked hard to develop his entire game and looks to become a force in the 185-pound class. But the 31-year-old will need to get by Ryan Jensen (fighting out of Omaha, Neb./15-4) if he is to truly make some noise in the talent-rich division. Coming off an impressive first-round victory over Steve Steinbeiss, the 32-year-old Jensen is well-rounded and ready for a trip to the next level of the division. Nicknamed “Quicksand,” Mike Pyle (fighting out of Las Vegas, Nev./18-6-1) took his time against his September opponent, Chris Wilson, submitting the vet in the third round of their bout. Now the 34-year-old welterweight and Dresden, Tennessee-born fighter looks to get by 24-year-old Jake Ellenberger (fighting out of Omaha, Neb./21-5). Ellenberger, a retired Marine and former wrestling coach at the University of Nebraska, has 13 wins by KO/TKO and five by submission in his career.

A Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt with a 9-2 mixed martial arts record, Rafaello Oliveira (fighting out of Whippany, NJ) holds three wins by TKO and three by submission in his professional career. A lightweight making his UFC debut, John Gunderson (fighting out of Las Vegas, Nev./22-6) is known for his sharp boxing skills but will need his complete fight game to be on point when he faces the grappling wiz from Brazil.

Chuck Liddell And Tito Ortiz To Coach TUF Season 11

December 16, 2009 12:41 by Victor

Las Vegas, NV (USA) – In The Ultimate Fighting Championship®, no feud has been more inspired than the one featuring light heavyweight legends Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz.  The long-standing rivalry between “The Iceman” and “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” has featured two, historic clashes inside the famed Octagon®, each of which was filled with heated exchanges, intense bravado, and passionate displays of athleticism. What’s more, each Liddell-Ortiz encounter left fans choosing sides in this epic rivalry.

In professional sports, fans live for rivalries. Whether it’s Boston vs. New York in baseball, Toronto vs. Montreal in hockey, or Ohio State vs. Michigan in football, fans have a burning desire to see their favorite teams soundly defeat eternal adversaries. Regardless of standings, rankings, or championships on the line, fans believe wins over bitter rivals are of the utmost importance.

In 2010, MMA’s biggest feud takes on a whole new meaning. In what will be one of the most hotly-contested seasons ever, Liddell and Ortiz have been selected to face off as coaches of Spike TV’s most popular original series ever, The Ultimate Fighter®. Scheduled to premiere on Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at 10:00pm ET/PT, two of the sport’s biggest icons will lead their respective teams in a season that will produce fireworks never-before-seen in the Liddell-Ortiz saga.

“The world knows that there is no love lost between Tito and Chuck,” UFC President Dana White said. “These two guys will do whatever it takes to beat each other. Whether it’s fighting or checkers, Chuck wants to beat Tito and Tito wants to beat Chuck. On Season 11 of The Ultimate Fighter, we’ll see which legend can score the upper hand when it comes to coaching the next batch of rising stars.”

A native of Santa Barbara, Calif., Liddell (21-7) served as coach of the first season of The Ultimate Fighter in January 2005. Known for his phenomenal striking ability and staunch takedown defense, “The Iceman” earned his way into the UFC Hall of Fame by defeating the likes of Vitor Belfort, Renato Sobral, Randy Couture (twice), and Ortiz (twice). Considered by many as the greatest 205-pound fighter ever, Liddell believes he will score another victory when he coaches opposite Ortiz next year.

“I am excited for the opportunity to coach on The Ultimate Fighter, especially since I get a chance to beat Tito again,” said Liddell, who became a pop culture icon with appearances on hit programs such as “Dancing with the Stars, “Entourage,” and “The Apprentice”. “This is a perfect chance for me to help young fighters grow and it’s a chance for me to get another win against Tito.”

The longest-reigning champion in UFC history, Ortiz (16-7-1) once held the light heavyweight title for nearly four years. An outstanding wrestler with vicious ground and pound, “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” owns wins over some of the sport’s elite, including Belfort, Forrest Griffin, Wanderlei Silva, as well as three victories over Hall of Famer Ken Shamrock. A coach on season three of The Ultimate Fighter, Ortiz returns to the show holding the firm belief that he will finally knock off his arch nemesis.

“This season of the show is important to me in so many ways,” said Ortiz, who appeared on the hit series “Celebrity Apprentice” in 2008. “I love coaching and I’m happy that I can give my fighters a chance to become better athletes. Plus, I think I’m a better coach than Chuck. I think my guys are going to be hungry and ready to smash Chuck’s guys. I can’t wait to see his face when that happens.”

UFC CHAMP TITO ORTIZ OPENS UP DURING BEST HEADS UP POKER MATCH OF SEASON “WRESTLING SAVED MY LIFE.”

December 10, 2009 12:41 by Victor

 SUPERMODEL JOANNA KRUPA IMPRESSES WITH
HER POKER PROWESS ON
POKERSTARS.NET MILLION DOLLAR CHALLENGE Most-watched Poker TV Show In History Airs New Episode on Sunday, Dec. 13 on FOX LOS ANGELES, Dec. 9, 2009 – POKERSTARS.NET MILLION DOLLAR CHALLENGE, the runaway most-watched poker television series in U.S. history, whose three episodes rank 1-2-3 in most number of viewers, returns on Sunday, December 13 with the most emotionally charged show of the season. PokerStars.net Million Dollar Challenge airs immediately after NFL on FOX coverage.*

Audience members at the taping of the PokerStars.Net Million Dollar Challenge’s fourth show still aren’t sure which was more surprising: UFC Champion Tito Ortiz baring his soul to his opponent, or supermodel Joanna Krupa acting as if poker, not modeling, is her profession.

In a first round heads up match against a college wrestling coach, Ortiz opened up about the impact the sport has had on his childhood and his career.

“Wrestling is what saved my life,” says Ortiz, in the middle of playing a hand. “I was a kid who was on the streets. My parents weren’t ready to grow up, you could say. They had a drug habit and wrestling is what saved me. I got into wrestling it kept me off the streets, kept me out of gangs. It changed my whole life completely.”

But just as impressive as Ortiz’s honesty are the skills he showcases in his opening round match. In what may arguably be the best heads up televised poker game of the year, Ortiz and his opponent go on a ridiculous roller coaster ride of great plays, monster suck outs and incredible calls that promise to keep poker fans on the edge of their seats throughout the show.

Fellow celebrity Joanna Krupa, the current Playboy cover model, was no less impressive. Named Maxim’s Sexiest Swimsuit Model in the World and a recent Dancing with the Stars contestant, Krupa shows she has a second career on the felt should she ever decide to stop modeling.

Krupa, who played in the 2006 World Series of Poker Main Event, and has long been a fan favorite in the poker community, mixes up her game, alternating conservative and aggressive play to keep her opponent off balance. The fact that she’s breathtakingly beautiful doesn’t make it any easier for her opponents to get any tells.

Krupa and Ortiz star in the fourth installment of the PokerStars.net Million Dollar Challenge, hosted by FOX’s Chris Rose and featuring Daniel “Kid Poker” Negreanu, as online qualifiers from around the country vie for their chance to play Negreanu one-on-one for $1,000,000.

Getting to the grand prize match won’t be easy: Contestants face a gauntlet of heads up matches, win and advance. Lose and go home:
•    Round 1: Take on Krupa or Ortiz in a fast-paced match. At least the contestants have the benefit of Negreanu coaching them at the table.
•    Round 2: Face off against 2003 World Series of Poker Main Event Champion Chris Moneymaker, 2009 World Series of Poker Main Event Champion Joe Cada, or rising poker star and Go Daddy girl Vanessa Rousso. In this round, Negreanu helps the contestants from a specially designed isolation booth, where he can see the player’s hole cards and talk directly to them privately.
•    Round 3 and Round 4: Back-to-back heads up matches against four-time WSOP bracelet winner Negreanu.

Plus, the PokerStars.net Million Dollar Challenge wouldn’t be complete without something for poker fans at home.  Viewers will have a chance to enter a freeroll tournament on PokerStars.net as part of the PokerStars.net $100,000 giveaway. Twice during each show, PokerStars.net will announce a special contest that will give viewers a chance to win easy money.

BELLATOR SIGNS U.S. OLYMPIAN AND NCAA CHAMPION BEN ASKREN

December 10, 2009 12:32 by Victor
CHICAGO (December 9, 2009) — Bellator Fighting Championships announced Wednesday the signing of highly touted MMA prospect Ben Askren to an exclusive long-term agreement.  Askren is a U.S. Olympian who competed in the 2008 Beijing Games in freestyle wrestling. While wrestling at the collegiate level at the University of Missouri, Askren won two NCAA Division I titles. Since announcing his plans to cross over into professional mixed martial arts after the conclusion of the Beijing Games, Askren has been one of the most sought-after free agents in the sport. Known for his unorthodox fighting style and world class credentials, Askren, 25, is slated to compete in Bellator’s welterweight (170 lbs.) division tournament. The promotion will kick off its second season on April 8, 2010 and will conduct eight-man tournaments in the featherweight (145 lbs.), lightweight (155 lbs.), welterweight (170 lbs.), and middleweight (185 lbs.) divisions to determine the No. 1 ranked challengers to face Bellator’s current champions. In February 2009, Askren, who is known as “Funky,” made his professional MMA debut and has since compiled an undefeated record of 3-0. MMAJunkie.com has labeled him as “one of the top prospects in all of mixed martial arts,” while BloodyElbow.com called his abilities “mesmerizing.” “I am very happy to welcome Ben to Bellator,” said Bjorn Rebney, founder and CEO of Bellator Fighting Championships. “Ben’s an exciting fighter with unlimited potential and an unparalleled list of Olympic and collegiate accomplishments. We believe he can become a true force in this sport. As an MMA fan, I can’t wait for Ben’s first fight in our tournament on FOX Sports Net, NBC and Telemundo this April.”  As the nation’s top MMA prospect, Askren joins a Bellator roster that includes elite fighters such as Eddie Alvarez (155 lbs. champion), Hector Lombard (185 lbs. champion), Lyman Good (170 lbs. champion), Joe Soto (145 lbs. champion) and many others.  Askren’s signing is the latest in a series of major offseason Bellator announcements that include the promotion’s historic new TV distribution alliance with FOX Sports Net, NBC and Telemundo. Bellator Season 2 begins April 8, 2010 and will run for 12 weeks. It will be followed by Bellator Season 3, which is slated to begin on Aug. 12, 2010 and will also run for 12 successive weeks.  Askren said the national TV alliances were a key factor in his decision to sign with Bellator.  “I like that my fights are going to broadcast nationally, I like the tournament-style format and I love the opportunity to be a part of something exciting and new,” he said. “I plan on winning Bellator. My goal, as it always has been, is to be the best in the world.” Askren, who was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and grew up outside of Milwaukee, Wis., now lives in Phoenix and trains at the renowned Arizona Combat Sports gym.  In addition to the wrestling techniques he honed at the collegiate and Olympic levels, he holds a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Askren is also engaged to be married on April 9th, one day after Bellator’s Season 2 premiere.  “My fiancé doesn’t really like the whole getting punched in the face thing, but she accepts it and is excited for me to continue to compete in MMA for Bellator.” Each of Bellator’s 24 fights during Seasons 2 and 3 will be distributed live in primetime on Thursday nights on FOX Sports Net and its regional sports network affiliates. The top moments from each week’s live events will then be condensed into an action-packed 30-minute highlight show, broadcast every Saturday night, late night, on NBC. A one-hour highlight show will air in Spanish on Telemundo every Saturday night from midnight to 1 a.m. Each of the three broadcasts will be aired in high definition.
