MMA SUBMISSION: WHERE IS KIMBO'S HEAD AT?

June 27, 2008 10:45 by jdelpay

Remember Kimbo Slice? Yeah, that guy who fought on CBS on May 31, in front of 6.51 million viewers at one point. He's kind of disappeared after the shaky win over James Thompson. And when The Mag tried to corner him this week through his manager, IceyMike, we didn't have much luck. "He's chillin'," the people around him say.

But Bas Rutten answered his phone, and proceeded to give a little insight into where Kimbo's head is at.

Rutten swears that Kimbo never tapped out; it was a signal to the ref that he was okay. He makes a valid point in saying that the ref was within a few feet of Kimbo—if there was any sort of tap, wouldn't he have stopped it? And after last weekend's The Ultimate Fighter finale, when CB Dollaway tapped once then appeared to change his mind, it's clear that in those situations, any decent ref will be wide-eyed looking for the tap. Despite all the conspiracy theories, I actually believe that Kimbo didn't tap.

What about conditioning? Slice looked like a beaten man only a few minutes into the fight. We knew he was a brawler who probably would struggle with three or five rounds of an MMA bout. But it seemed like he'd be able to make it three minutes, right? Slice was dragging badly at the end of both rounds, and Rutten and partner Randy Khatami did a masterful job of reviving him in the corner with a combo of ice, water and harsh words. Rutten is adamant that Slice was in very good shape for the fight.

Not sure I entirely buy that. Elite XC promoter Gary Shaw said Kimbo did almost 200 interviews in the two weeks before the fight. And as somebody who was around him for a few hours two days before the fight, Slice did seem way out of his element. He's not big on talking to begin with, so I believe the pressure probably was pretty crushing. And CBS certainly hyped Kimbo to the point where the pressure to maul James Thompson, create a surprise new ratings monster for the network, save financially-distressed Elite XC and then shoot spider webs out of his hands and climb out the roof of the Prudential Center must have been overwhelming. I think Bas is probably right…to a certain extent. Kimbo Slice wants to be a big-time, well-paid mixed-martial artist, though. Well, then, all that other stuff comes with the territory.

And now the most important question on many MMA fans' minds…when and who will Kimbo fight next? The obvious choice is Brett Rogers, an unbeaten, exciting heavyweight who won the first bout on the May 31 card. I personally think Kimbo wouldn't last very long with Rogers, a well-rounded heavyweight. Rutten vehemently disagrees. "No way, that would be a very good fight," Rutten says. "The biggest thing about Rogers is that he pissed Kimbo off by calling him out. Kimbo really wants him."

That would be an exciting fight—definitely Saturday Night Fights headline material. But I firmly believe it will not happen for awhile. I fully expect CBS to come up with a late summer/early fall card where there are co-main events—Rogers against somebody and Kimbo against somebody else (my best guess for this one: Sean Gannon, the Boston cop who beat Kimbo in their infamous street brawl). Both will be expected to win, then trash talk extensively afterward to set up a huge fight at the end of the year against one another.
